Want to understand why it is that the GOP and DEM look at you like you’ve grown horns when you talk about Third Parties and cry spoiler at you? Here’s why:
The GOP and DEM think that the general election is really the PRIMARIES. They consider the General election to be a RUNOFF between whoever they pick in the primaries.
This is why the two establishment parties keep saying that a third or fourth choice screws up the election. They think November 6th is a runoff!
Of course, this is ignoring the fact that voter turnout in the primaries is about 8% of eligible voters for the GOP Primaries and only about 3% of eligible voters for the DEM Primaries. And it generally doesn’t take a majority (just a plurality) vote to get the nomination. So most likely the winner of the GOP and DEM primaries can win with less than 4% of eligible voters for the GOP and less than 1.5% of eligible voters for the DEM. Isn’t that wonderful? The GOP believes that 4% of the eligible voters should pick who your choice is, and the DEM believes that 1.5% of the eligible voters should pick who your choice is in the runoff (I MEAN the General Election).
And of course, because that tiny minority are looking out for your best interests, we don’t NEED any third parties… right?
Don’t buy the lie. Join the party of your choice. Vote your choice in the general election. When the GOP and DEM feel the pain, then they will change the system to account for more candidates.
