We are delighted to welcome former Louisiana governor and Congressman Buddy Roemer to our Party! (Yes, that’s right, he was BOTH a governor AND a Congressman – only one running with those credentials – impressive, eh?)

Governor Roemer announced today (Feb. 22) that he has left the Republican Party but will continue seeking the nomination for president of the United States – under the banner of the Reform Party!

This has been a long time coming! The GOP virtually shunned Gov. Roemer this entire primary debate season, not inviting him to any of that party’s debates for dubious reasons, such as he had not raised enough money (since when is that a legitimate criterion?) and did not rank high enough in the polls (though at one time he out-polled Texas Gov. Rick Perry in New Hampshire, who was invited to the debate in that state, and every other debate while he was running).

Could it be that because Gov. Roemer refuses to take PAC money or donations over $100, he would expose the other GOP nominees (and President Obama) as political sellouts? Whatever the reason, the GOP ignored Gov. Roemer, and very wisely, he has moved on. Much like Ronald Reagan, when asked why he had left the Democrats to join the Republicans responded “I didn’t leave the Democrats, they left me,” the Republicans have left Gov. Roemer – and many, many others – and the Democrats have too, for that matter. The Reform Party is the ideal home for Gov. Roemer, because its platform so closely mirrors his own.

In addition to seeking the Reform Party’s nomination, Gov. Roemer is trying to become the candidate for Americans Elect – which is not a actually a political party, but a grassroots movement committed to mobilizing the country to “pick a president, not a party.” Some of AE’s faithful, however, have lost all confidence in ANY political party (not just the two incumbent parties), and so they do not think Gov. Roemer’s decision to join the Reform Party was wise. Of course, as one might expect, we disagree.

As Americans Elect has no political platform (it is instead a vehicle to mobilize voters behind the candidate of their choosing), there is no reason why we would not wish them well, and we intend to support their efforts as best we can. We hope that their supporters return the favor, and unite with us in our common goal: to elect a credible alternative to the same-old same-old candidates of the two incumbent parties.

From Friday, October 21st through Sunday October 23rd 2011, Reform Party leaders and organizers from across the country gathered at the Merrell Institute in Bohemia, New York to meet fellow reformers, learn about current issues, and plan strategy for 2012.

Mr. JD West (MO) and Ms. Jaime Dives (UT) expressed it well. “We had a wonderful time,” Mr. West stated. “Thanks to everyone that put it on!” Ms. Dives agreed, saying that “Thanks to everybody! It was fun and so great to see you all!”

The event was two and a half days of learning how to stop the bipolar left-right gridlock that has gripped our nation, learn about current issues, get to know other Reformers and learn how to participate and be effective.

Attendees seemed to agree it was a tactical and strategic success as well as being enjoyable. Mr. Mark Kravis (CA) said that “A lightning bolt has struck politics as the Reform Party awakens. We should do more of these around the country.” Ms. Pat Benjamin (NJ), a founding Reform Party member, also saw significant value in the event, stating “There was plenty that went on and it was very educational. Two great speakers and workshops; planning sessions for the Reform Party; and possible candidates… there were lots of political ideas discussed and many points of view represented.”

Speakers included Retired Intelligence Officer Charles “Sam” Faddis who spoke on reforming the United States intelligence and national security policies and bureaucracies. After a decade of spending and the construction of huge new bureaucracies for improved national security, are we really any safer? Or have we just thrown money at the problem? It was heartening to hear straight talk from someone with his breadth of knowledge and experience.

Former Comptroller General and head of the GAO David W. Walker educated the attendees on his plan for restoring fiscal sanity to Washington and received positive reviews from the attendees. He painted a picture of a government spending headed toward disaster, but likewise provided real-world proposals that could halt that fall.

Mr. Bill Dopf (FL) was very pleased with the speakers. “What a great opportunity to meet and network with Party members,” he explained. “David Walker’s presentation was a highlight. His assessment of the true National Debt is a sobering reminder of how Democrats AND Republicans have failed America.” Ms. Benjamin agreed, “The speakers were great — David Walker for GAO head, Sam Faddis, former CIA operative…the speakers provided information you probably won’t hear anywhere else, partially because of the great questions asked by the attendees.”

In addition, there were workshops on:

Recruiting members and building your organization

Running and participating in effective meetings

What are we looking for in a Presidential Candidate

Using social media for outreach

Ms. Benjamin (NJ) had praise for the workshops as well. “[The] Workshops were informative.
There was plenty that went on and it was very educational…the workshops on party building (etc.) for state leaders, were something that was not conducted by the 90s Reform Party and should have been.”

We hope to repeat this event around the nation as requested by the attendees, so all Reform Party leaders, members, and friends have the same opportunity to meet new and old friends, learn about current issues, and improve their party building skills.

Belleville Councilman Joins Reform Party of NJ

Belleville, NJ, 12/1/2011— The Reform Party of New Jersey’s Executive Committee announced on Thursday evening that Belleville Township Councilman Kevin Kennedy is now a registered member of the Reform Party, thus making him the first elected official within the Garden State to join the newly founded alternative party.

“I think this is a very positive development,” said Dennis Mikolay, the organization’s co-founder. “It is clear that the Reform Party’s message resonates with people. I look forward to working alongside Councilman Kennedy to help promote the message of political reform.”

Belleville Township, which is located next to Newark, has a population of 35,926.

Councilman Kennedy was first elected to the Township Committee in 1998. After several years as a Councilman-at-large, he was re-elected in 2003, 2006, and 2011. An active member of the community, he was recently named “Man of the Year” by the Belleville Irish-American Association, and currently also serves as the President of the Belleville Historical Society.

The Reform Party of New Jersey was founded by a group of student activists in 2010. While Councilman Kennedy is the party’s first elected official, he is not the first establishment figure to abandon the two major parties. Several months ago, Mark D. Quick resigned his position as a member of Warren County Republican Committee and joined the Reform Party.

“The recent exodus of courageous citizens from the two major parties is inspiring,” said Chairman Jacob Zychick. “The Reform Party leadership has recently been approached by several other elected officials who have expressed an interest in leaving their respective parties in favor of ours.”

Additional information pertaining to the Reform Party of NJ can be found online at www.reformpartynj.org.'
