If you haven't seen the news already…It turns out that the US Chamber of Commerce, fearful of further cyber-attacks by "hactivist" group Anonymous and also dreading a propaganda war with various other activist groups, tasked their legal counsel Hunton & Williams with obtaining improved cyber-security contracts and also with getting proposals for a proactive defense against these groups.
Three firms were brought in and apparently agreed to do a joint proposal. One of those was HBGary, a cyber-security contractor that seeks to work with the Federal Government. HBGary, not content with "hardening the target" decided to go aggressive and proposed various measures including, according to the Washington Post:
The documents include personal details about activists who work for the group and suggestions for targeting its reputation, including planting fake documents, tying the organization to radical activists or creating "fake insider personas" on social media.
According to the Los Angeles Times:
A Team Themis report e-mailed to two Hunton & Williams attorneys in December by a Berico Technologies analyst suggested planting a "false document" in hopes it would be publicly released by anti-chamber groups. The plan also called for creating "two fake insider personas" inside the activist organizations that could then be used to discredit the groups.
Other sample reports included mock dossiers of activists, some with false information about their marital state and address but with actual photographs of them.
At this point, you need to ask yourself the question, should a company that would employ these methods against US Citizens be allowed to have GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS? What other companies and entities have they been performing such services for? We say the answer is absolutely not.
The attorneys involved at Hunton & Williams should likewise be brought before the Bar to account for their participation. This kind of activity clearly violates the ethics of their position.
The lack of ethics exhibited here is sickening, and these companies operational strategies and mindsets represent a clear and present risk to your Constitutional freedoms. The message they seek to communicate to you is don't speak out, don't criticize, because you could be next….
