Due to inflation, a single dollar won’t purchase much anymore, but it can fund an alternative to the Democratic and Republican Parties. On August 8th, the Reform Party of the United States held its second annual National Dollar Day Fundraiser. During this event, party leadership asked supporters to donate one dollar, or one dollar a month, to fund the party.
National Dollar Day is August 8th, which marks the anniversary of the United States Government establishing the US Dollar as the base currency. During this event, the Reform Party noted that one dollar in 1786 had the same purchasing power as $32.84 today.
This fundraiser is part of the long-term plan by the Reform Party to rebuild its donor base.
“Four and a half years ago, the Reform Party’s treasury was a desert,” said Reform Party Chairman Nicholas Hensley. “The party was raising 200 dollars or less annually. We hadn’t won an election or appointment in years, and asking people for large amounts of money would have been met with laughter. So, we started by asking for small amounts of money, one dollar recurring, four dollars recurring, three dollars recurring… and our income started to grow.”
In 2019 and 2020 combined the Reform Party raised a meager $412.55. In the past six months, the same organization raised $2,183.31. Over the past four and a half years, the Reform Party also won 11 offices by election or appointment. Hensley went on to explain more:
“People will freely give small amounts, and they become attached to that small investment. Many people start by giving five dollars or less a month, then support their contribution actively through attending meetings and telling people about the Reform Party. There’s a mantra with small donors: If you have someone’s dollar, you have their vote. The mantra is true. People will always support their investment.”
The National Dollar Day Fundraiser is one of many fundraisers the Reform Party runs to bolster its treasury. This includes an annual May 4th fundraiser where the Reform Party asks for four dollars or four dollars a month and others.
“In order to continue winning offices, and obtain ballot access nationally, the Reform Party has to continue building a growing base of donors and volunteers. To do that, we’re going to continue these fundraisers perpetually,” said Hensley.
The Reform Party of the United States is a moderate, centrist party formed in 1995 as an alternative to the political establishment.
